Geeking out about Candle Wax

The story behind Scent & Sip's wax blend.

Making candles is like making bread.  There are very few core ingredients so you need to choose them wisely.  The 2 most critical things in candle making are wax and wick.

There are several different types of mainstream wax and all have their merits.  You choose the different wax types or blends based on your desired outcome.  At Scent & Sip, our goals are to have a clean, environmentally responsible, long-lasting candle with a huge scent throw that is perfect for containers.

Dissecting each of these goals led us to our blend of choice which is a soy & coconut blend.  We believe it exceeds all of our goals!

Our formula starts with cold-pressed coconut oil from the meat of the fruit. The oil then sustains hydrogenation and is turned into coconut wax with a beautiful, creamy white consistency.

Hydrogenation is a high-temperature, high-pressure process that changes kinky, unsaturated Fatty Acids into straight-chain saturated Fatty Acids, by forcing a pair of hydrogen atoms into each kink as a splint would support a broken bone.

The straightened-out FA molecules can now pack together more compactly, like a bundle of twigs that have had all their crooked twiglets trimmed off. Fats containing these compacted Fatty Acids become harder and less fluid. If your soybean- or sunflower-oil margarine hadn't been hydrogenated, you would be pouring it, rather than spreading it, on your toast. Enough of the sciencey stuff!

Soy wax is the other ingredient in our blend. This is needed to harden the coconut wax and add to its long-lasting fragrance. This is a vegetable wax made from the oil of soybeans. After harvesting, the beans are cleaned, cracked, de-hulled, and rolled into flakes. The oil is then extracted from the flakes and hydrogenated.

In addition to sustainability, a well-made soy candle will burn cleanly and slowly. While the performance and beauty of soy candles speak for themselves, they are also eco-friendly, renewable, American grown, sustainable, carbon neutral; the list goes on and on.

Our coconut & soy blend not only burns cleaner than its 100% soy wax counterpart, it maintains the integrity and maximum volume of your incredible scent creations. Where other candles lose the subtle notes and character, the coconut wax blend allows every nuance to burn through.  You worked hard on your personal scent blend - enjoy it.

Average burn times by ounce:

7 oz = 40 hours

8 oz = 55 hours

10 oz = 80 hours

12 oz = 96 hours

To achieve these averages remember to keep your wick trimmed!
